Smith.ai vs AnswerConnect: AI help or a person on every call
Smith.ai pairs AI with live agents; AnswerConnect pledges a person on every call. How each books, records and bills, and which one suits your calls.
Mid-October, the furnace calls begin. An HVAC owner is under a house while the phone in the truck rings out. A solo attorney is in court until four. A clinic’s front desk is checking in one patient while two lines blink. All three paid to make the phone ring, and all three are missing the calls.
Smith.ai and AnswerConnect often share that shortlist. Both answer in your business name, day or night. Read their own pages as of October 2026, though, and they make opposite bets about who should pick up.
The 60-second version
- Smith.ai lets AI take routine calls and hands hard ones to live agents. AnswerConnect has publicly pledged a person on every call and chat.
- Smith.ai bills per call; its homepage says a long new-client call costs the same as a short one, though its reasonable use policy limits intake length on live-agent plans and can add fees for calls outside it. AnswerConnect sells minutes, counting the write-up after each call and website chats too.
- Smith.ai can finish intake on the call and book into your software, though booking and longer intake are add-ons on its live-agent plans. AnswerConnect books through Setmore or your calendar and sends details on.
- Recording defaults are opposite: Smith.ai greets callers with a recorded notice and says recordings are deleted after three months; AnswerConnect records nothing until you switch it on.
Two bets on who answers the phone
Smith.ai leads with a hybrid: an AI receptionist takes routine calls, live agents from its Live Agent Network take the hard ones, and you choose the mix. It also sells plans where a live agent based in North America answers every call.
AnswerConnect has gone the other way, in public. Its “Pledge People, Not Bots” campaign commits to real people on every customer interaction, with calls and website chats answered by receptionists working from home. It points to a OnePoll survey of 6,000 people it published in May 2026, in which 85% said they would rather speak to a real person than an AI or a bot.
So the first question is not which company is better. It is whether you will let software take some of your calls, and which ones.
What actually decides it
Five questions settle most of it:
- After closing, or in bursts during jobs? Three calls a night is a different job from forty on the first cold Monday.
- How much should be asked before you call back? A number, or a full intake: practice area, county, the age of the furnace.
- Where should the call end up? A message in an app, or a booked slot in your CRM.
- Do some callers need Spanish? Smith.ai’s AI recognizes a Spanish speaker on its own and carries on in Spanish, and a dedicated Spanish line with live agents is an add-on. AnswerConnect sends Spanish calls to bilingual receptionists through a routing option you add.
- Calls or minutes? The billing unit decides what a long call costs you.
Smith.ai: intake first, with AI on the routine calls
Smith.ai is built to turn a call into finished intake. For law firms it describes qualifying callers, booking the consultation during the call, sending a retainer for e-signature and, through live agents, running conflict checks. It names native connections to Clio, MyCase, Lawmatics and Filevine, integrations with ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro, and more than 7,000 systems in all.
For home services it describes triage that listens for “gas leak”, “no heat” or “flooding” and passes those calls to a live agent who reaches your on-call technician, while the AI screens routine maintenance requests for your normal scheduling. Smith.ai says its AI never claims to be human when a caller asks directly.
It bills per call, not per minute, within a reasonable use policy. On its live-agent plans, intake beyond the included questions, appointment booking and payment collection are paid add-ons, and booking needs a public booking link such as Calendly. Returning missed calls is work for its live agents too, so ask which plan includes booking, longer intake and callbacks.
AnswerConnect: a person on every call, around the clock
AnswerConnect sells live receptionists 24 hours a day, weekends and holidays included, for after-hours calls, overflow or every call. The same people answer website chat, which comes with every plan. Its legal page says receptionists are trained in legal terminology and handle intake and call routing.
Booking runs through Setmore, a scheduling app included with its plans, or your own online calendar. Call details go to Clio, PracticePanther, Salesforce, Zoho, the field service app Workiz and others, with Zapier for the rest.
Plans are sold by minutes. Its FAQ says the count includes the receptionist’s after-call work taking your message, and its chat page says chats draw on the same minutes. For clinics, its medical office page offers a HIPAA-compliant option in the client portal for messages that carry health information.

Recording is the part owners skip
Federal law lets you record a call you are part of, unless the purpose is criminal or tortious, but several states, including California, Florida, Pennsylvania, Washington, Massachusetts and Maryland, require everyone on the call to consent, and others add their own rules. The safe habit is the same everywhere: the notice plays first, before the caller says anything.
Ask either company to play you the exact greeting, and download any Smith.ai recording you need past three months. Our playbook on texting, AI answering and call recording rules has the state rules with their sources. It is not legal advice; confirm with counsel.
Pros and cons
Smith.ai
Pros:
- A call can end as a booked consult or job, with the intake in your software.
- Billed per call rather than per minute, within Smith.ai’s reasonable use policy.
Cons:
- Needs a clear intake script and firm rules for handing calls to a person.
- On AI-first plans, callers who want a person meet software first.
- Returning missed calls needs a plan with live agents.
AnswerConnect
Pros:
- A person answers every call and chat.
- Website chat and Setmore scheduling come with the plans.
Cons:
- Long intakes and write-ups use more of the plan’s minutes.
- Its integration list names Workiz but not ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro, so check your software.
- No AI option for owners happy to let software take the routine calls.
Who should pick which
A solo attorney. New-matter calls arrive while you are in court. If you want consults screened, booked and in Clio before you leave the courthouse, Smith.ai is built for that. If your callers are frightened or grieving and you want a human voice every time, AnswerConnect fits better.
An HVAC company in peak season. The first hard freeze brings no-heat emergencies and tune-up requests in the same hour. Smith.ai suits a shop on ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro that wants emergencies pushed to the on-call tech; ask how long an emergency intake can run before reasonable use applies. AnswerConnect suits a shop that wants a person on every call; watch the minutes in a peak week.
A two-location clinic. A HIPAA covered entity should start with the vendors’ own words: Smith.ai says it is not built for protected health information, and AnswerConnect offers a HIPAA option for messages. Get the terms, including a business associate agreement, in writing before any patient call. A wellness or veterinary practice that wants AI booking across both sites fits Smith.ai.
Where we fit
We build AI receptionists, missed-call text-back and website chat inside the CRM a business already runs, with the text sent from a number registered with the carriers so its texts deliver. The agent books into your calendar, sends emergencies to whoever is on call, and files every recording on the contact in your CRM. The number and the CRM are set up in your name, and a HIPAA covered entity gets a signed business associate agreement before the first patient call.
That puts us nearer Smith.ai’s end of this comparison. The difference is who else touches the call: one team runs your ads, your Google profile and the answering, so calls and bookings can be traced to the ad or profile that brought them. The work is affordable, and the recording greeting, the intake questions and the on-call routing are written with you. If your callers expect a person every time, though, AnswerConnect has made exactly that its public pledge, and that is the reason to call them instead.
Before you sign with anyone
Pull last month’s call log and mark every missed call by hour. That sheet shows whether you need overnight coverage, overflow during jobs, or both.
Send us that sheet through the form below. The plan that comes back sorts your missed calls into the ones an AI receptionist could finish alone and the ones that need a person, lists the questions your intake should ask, and drafts a recording greeting written for your state.
You made it to the end. Now let's get you more customers.
AI Agents & Chatbots is part of what we set up and run every day, along with the search, ads and follow-up around it. Tell us about your business and we will send back what to fix first.
