Answer engine optimization that makes Google's answer your answer.
Ask Google what a water heater swap costs, or who fixes a cracked slab nearby, and it no longer just hands back ten links. It lifts a sentence or a short list out of one company's website and puts it at the top of the screen, with that company's name under it. This is the work that makes that company you.
For owners of local businesses who get asked the same ten questions every week. Agencies buying answer engine work white-label, see the partner model.
A search engine returns pages. An answer engine returns the answer.
For twenty years, searching meant getting a list and picking from it. That is still there, but a growing share of results now put the answer itself on the screen: a boxed paragraph at the top, a stack of related questions that open in place, a spoken reply from a phone or a speaker. Google is not writing those. It is quoting a page it already trusts.
So the job is not to argue with the change. It is to be the page that gets quoted. For a local business the prize is narrow and valuable: being the answer to "who fixes this near me" and "what does that cost", in your own town, with your name under it.
Four places Google hands over the answer instead of a list.
These are the ones a local business can actually win. They share one habit: each pulls a small, clearly marked piece out of a page, which is why how a page is written decides who gets pulled.
Featured snippets
The boxed answer above the normal results. Google picks one passage from one page, usually a short paragraph, a numbered set of steps or a small table, and shows it with the source underneath. It is the single most visible place your words can appear.
People Also Ask
The stack of related questions that expand when tapped. Each one is its own small answer box with its own source, and the list grows as people open them. A page that answers several neighboring questions can appear in the stack more than once.
Voice and assistant results
When someone asks a phone or a speaker out loud, there is no page two and usually no second answer. One source gets read back. It is very often the same page that holds the snippet, which is why writing a sentence that can be said out loud is worth the effort.
FAQ and HowTo markup
Code in the background that labels your questions as questions and your steps as steps. It does not create rankings. It removes doubt about what is on the page, and it keeps the visible content and the machine-readable version saying the same thing.
A note on AI Overviews
AI Overviews, live since May 2024, and AI Mode, since March 2025, are a different animal: Google writes a summary rather than quoting one page. The groundwork overlaps, but the measurement and the tactics do not, so they have their own page.
AI search visibilityWhat we do not chase
Answer boxes for questions nobody in your market asks, and questions that end the visit instead of starting it. We pick the questions that come up on your phone before someone books, and leave the trivia to the encyclopedias.
What actually changes on your pages.
Not a rebuild. Six edits, made on the pages you already have, in the order we make them.
Put the question in the heading, in your customer's words
Not "Water Heater Services". The heading becomes "How long does it take to replace a water heater?" because that is what gets typed and said. One question per heading, phrased the way a person phrases it, not the way a brochure does.
Answer it in the first 40 to 55 words, directly underneath
Snippets are cut to roughly that length, so we write to it: a complete answer in two or three sentences, starting with the answer rather than with context. Everything else you want to say goes after it, where it can be as long as it needs to be.
Give the real number, or the honest range
"It depends on the job" is not an answer, and it never gets quoted. A range with the reason it varies is an answer, and it does the second job of filtering out the calls you did not want anyway.
Use a list for steps and a table for comparisons
If the honest answer is a sequence, number it. If it is a comparison, put it in a small table with plain column headings. Google lifts these whole, and they are easier to read on a phone, which is where the question came from.
Add FAQ markup that matches the visible page exactly
Same wording in the code as on the screen. Markup that describes questions the visitor cannot see is a guidelines problem, not a shortcut, and it is the most common way a well-meant FAQ section gets a page in trouble.
Read it out loud before it ships
If the answer sentence is hard to say, it is a bad candidate for a spoken result and usually a bad sentence anyway. Short clauses, no jargon, no dependent clause stacked on another. This one edit does more for voice results than any markup does.
Five jobs, because the answer happens in five different places.
SEO is the base: the technical, on-page and authority work that gets your pages ranked at all, and the page that explains the whole model. This page is the next step in, where Google quotes a ranked page word for word on the results screen. When Google writes its own summary instead of quoting you, that is AI search visibility. When the question is asked in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude rather than in Google, that isgenerative engine optimization. And what happens after the click, whether the page answers the person and turns them into a call, issearch experience optimization.
They overlap on purpose. A page written to be quoted is usually easier for every other surface to use as well, which is why this is normally where we start.
Four checks, and one of them is honest about the downside.
Answer engine work has a measurement problem that nobody selling it likes to mention: winning the box can mean fewer clicks, not more. So we watch four things together rather than one number.
In Search Console, filter to queries that start with how, what, why, when and how much. A page that takes the box typically shows a jump in impressions and a move to the top position at the same time. That pairing is the clearest signal there is.
We keep a list of the questions worth owning in your market and check them by hand each month, on a phone, from your area. Who holds the box today, and whether anything you publish has changed that. It takes twenty minutes and no tool reports it as clearly.
The click rate on a question you now answer on the results page can fall while the business gets better. Somebody who reads your answer, sees your name and calls an hour later never shows up as a click. Lead volume and booked work are the numbers that decide whether this paid off, so those are the ones we report against.
Which questions we targeted, which ones you now hold, what changed on which page, and what is next. Plain language, no vanity metrics, and a straight answer when a question turned out not to be worth chasing.
Sold by you, produced by us.
AEO is an easy thing to sell and a slow thing to staff, because it is question research, careful writing and markup rather than a tool you can buy. We run it white-label underneath your brand: your client relationship, your reporting template, our production. Beyaoshy has done this work since 2015, for more than 800 businesses and the 19 agency partners who resell it today.
How the partner model works- Question research scoped to the client's market, not a keyword dump
- Answer blocks written to the client's voice, ready to paste or published by us
- FAQ and HowTo markup validated before it ships
- A monthly summary you can send on with your logo on it
Questions owners ask about this one.
What is answer engine optimization, in plain English?
Google often answers a question right on the results page by lifting a sentence, a list or a table out of somebody’s website and showing it with a link back to that site. Answer engine optimization is the work that makes the lifted answer yours. Nothing exotic happens: your page has to ask the question the way people ask it, answer it immediately, and be easy to quote.
Is this different from SEO, or is it the same thing with a new name?
It is a part of SEO, not a replacement for it. Google only quotes pages it already ranks, so the technical and content work on our SEO page has to be in place first. AEO is the narrower job of shaping a page so it is the easiest thing on the results screen to quote. Anyone selling it as a separate system that replaces SEO is selling you the same work twice.
If Google shows the answer, do I still get the click?
Sometimes not, and we will say so plainly. A question like "what time do you close" gets answered on the results page and the click never happens. That is fine, because the person got what they needed and now knows your name. The questions worth chasing are the ones where the answer leads somewhere: what a job costs, how long it takes, whether it can wait until Monday. Those get answered and then clicked.
What about AI Overviews and ChatGPT? Is that the same work?
Related, but a different place. AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google writing its own summary instead of quoting one page, and that is covered on AI search visibility. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude are off Google entirely, and that is generative engine optimization. The clear question headings and short answers on this page help all three, which is why we start here.
How long before anything shows up?
Snippets move faster than rankings because Google is choosing a passage, not re-ranking a page. On a page that already ranks in the first several results, a rewritten answer can be picked up within a few weeks of the page being crawled again. On a page that does not rank yet, the ranking work comes first and the timeline is months, not weeks.
Do we need FAQ markup for this to work?
It helps and it is cheap to add, but it is not the lever people think it is. Google reads the visible page; the markup tells it what it is looking at. A page with real questions and real answers wins without markup more often than a thin page with perfect markup wins with it. We add the markup, and we spend the real effort on the answers.
