Bing SEO for local businesses, because Bing is more than Bing.com.

Bing's index sits behind the search box in Windows, Edge's default search and Microsoft Copilot. It helps supply results on Yahoo and DuckDuckGo, and it is one of the web sources AI assistants have drawn on. We get your site into that index, your Bing Places listing right and your pages ranking, so a customer who never opens Google can still find you.

Written for local business owners. For agencies, Bing SEO goes out under the agency's brand rather than ours; that is how the partner model works.

Behind Bing, Copilot, Windows and Edge

Plenty of your customers use Bing without ever choosing it.

Hardly anyone sets out to use Bing. They type a question into the Windows taskbar, search from the address bar of a new laptop running Edge, or ask Copilot, and Bing does the looking up. Each of those is a place your business can appear or be missing. Some lean on Bing completely and some only in part, so here is each one with the relationship stated plainly.

Bing.com and Bing Maps

Bing's own

The ranked results and the local map on Bing itself, built from Bing's crawl of the web and from Bing Places listings.

Windows search

Built in

Type a question into the search box on the Windows taskbar and the web results that come back are Bing's. Plenty of people use it without thinking of it as a search engine at all.

Microsoft Edge

Bing by default

Edge comes with Bing set as its search engine. Anyone searching from the address bar of an Edge browser they never changed is searching Bing.

Microsoft Copilot

Grounded in Bing

When a question needs current information from the web, Copilot looks it up on Bing and links the pages it used. A page Bing has not indexed is not one it can link.

Yahoo and DuckDuckGo

Bing in part

Both draw on Bing for part of what they show, so the indexing and ranking work on this page carries over to them without a separate project.

AI assistants that search the web

One source of several

When ChatGPT and similar assistants look something up, Bing has been one of the search sources they draw on. That makes it one input among several, not a switch, and it is an input you can actually work on.

The rest of what assistants weigh, mostly mentions and citations on sites you do not own, is covered under generative engine optimization. The job here is Bing's own index: getting into it, and ranking once you are there.

A site can be healthy on Google and half missing from Bing.

Bing runs its own crawler and keeps its own index, separate from Google's. It has its own counterpart to Search Console and its own business listing. Local search programs built around Google tend to leave all of that untouched, so a business can look fine in one engine and patchy in the other without anyone noticing.

What a Google-only plan leaves behind

  • No Bing Webmaster Tools account, so nobody reads the errors Bing reports
  • A sitemap Bing was never told about
  • A Bing Places listing that is unclaimed, out of date or missing
  • Pages Bing found and left out of its index, with nobody asking why

What we leave in place

  • A verified Bing Webmaster Tools account in your business's name
  • IndexNow reporting every new or changed page
  • A claimed Bing Places listing that matches Google line for line
  • A monthly read of what Bing indexed, dropped and ranked

Six jobs, and how we know each one is finished.

It is a short list of Bing-specific setup, a longer list of fixes Bing reports about your site, and the local work that pays off on both engines. Each job has a point where it is demonstrably done, and we tell you when we reach it.

  1. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools

We verify ownership, submit your XML sitemap and set the account up in your business's name. If Google Search Console is already in place, Bing can import the site from it, which saves a step. From then on we can see what Bing sees: what it crawled, what it skipped and what it thinks is wrong.

    Done when

The site shows as verified and Bing reports the sitemap as read.

  2. Switch on IndexNow

IndexNow is an open protocol Bing supports. Instead of waiting for a crawler to come back around, your site tells Bing when a page is published, changed or removed. Many website platforms and plugins can send these notices on their own; where yours cannot, we add it. Your sitemap still covers Google, so nothing changes on that side.

    Done when

A page you publish is reported to Bing on the day it goes live.

  3. Clear what Bing flags

Bing's reports and its Site Scan tool list the problems it ran into: pages it could not reach, redirects that chain or loop, two addresses for the same page, missing titles and descriptions, and robots rules that shut its crawler out by accident. We work through that list rather than assuming a clean Google report means a clean Bing one.

    Done when

Every service and area page you care about is in Bing's index, and the leftovers are not.

  4. Get Bing Places right, and keep it matched to Google

Bing Places for Business is Bing's own business listing, the one that feeds its map and local results. It can import your details from your Google Business Profile, which is a fast start rather than the finish. After the import we check what landed: the name spelled the same way, the categories, hours, service area, photos and the link to your site. From then on, one rule: when anything changes on Google, it changes on Bing Places the same day.

    Done when

Someone could read the two listings side by side and not find a difference.

  5. Make every page easy for Bing to read

Bing reads a page much the way Google does, so the fixes are shared: a title that names the service and the town, one heading that says what the page is about, the business facts written out in plain text, and structured data that matches what the page actually shows. We do not write separate pages for Bing. We make the ones you have clear enough for both, on top of the foundation our SEO work lays.

    Done when

Each page's title, heading and markup describe the same business doing the same work.

  6. Earn the reviews and citations both engines check

Both engines check what other sites say about you before they trust what your own site says. Consistent listings on the directories that cover your trade and your area, and a steady flow of genuine reviews, count on Bing and Google alike. We run this as part of local SEO, so the work is done once and pays off in both places.

    Done when

Never, strictly. This one is a habit, checked every month.

Bing traffic, counted apart from Google's.

Folded into one organic line, Bing disappears behind Google's larger numbers and nobody can tell whether the work paid. So the monthly report keeps it separate, from the first impression to the call.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Clicks, impressions and average position by search term and by page, straight from Bing. It is the Bing counterpart to Google Search Console, and it is where Bing's own numbers live.

Visits and leads by engine

In analytics, Bing, Yahoo and DuckDuckGo arrive as separate sources. We split them out and show which of those visits turned into a form or a booking, instead of merging them into one organic total.

Calls from Bing visitors

Call tracking on your website shows a tracking number to visitors who arrived from Bing, so the calls they place are counted and attributed. The number on your listings stays the same everywhere, which keeps those listings consistent.

Index health

How many of your pages Bing has indexed, what it failed to crawl this month and which changes IndexNow reported. Small numbers, and usually the first place a problem shows up.

Bing sends fewer visits than Google in most markets, so we read it by the quarter rather than the week, and keep it on its own line so a small number is not hidden inside a big one.

The Bing piece of a bigger search plan.

This page is about one engine: Bing's index, its results and its business listing. Underneath, it rests on the same SEO foundation as the rest of our search work, since a site Bing struggles to read usually gives Google trouble too. It shares its listings and reviews work with local SEO and your Google Business Profile, and it leaves the wider question of what assistants say about you to generative engine optimization.

Microsoft Ads alongside it

Paid, on the same results

Bing's results carry ads as well as listings. We run Microsoft Ads too, so paid search can cover the terms your pages do not rank for yet, and both report into the same count of calls and forms. The ads stop when the budget does. The work on this page keeps going.

What we will not claim

That Bing is about to overtake Google, or that ranking there guarantees a mention in Copilot or ChatGPT. Google still handles most searches in the US, and what Copilot or ChatGPT chooses to say is decided inside Microsoft and OpenAI, not by anyone selling SEO. The case for Bing is plainer than that: modest work, much of it reused from your Google setup, reaching places a Google-only plan never touches.

Bing SEO under an agency's name.

When an agency sells Bing SEO, nobody on its staff has to learn a second set of webmaster tools. We run the Webmaster Tools setup, IndexNow, Bing Places and the monthly Bing report for the agency's clients, with the agency's brand on the report and our team out of sight. Agencies already work with us this way.

See the partner model

What owners ask before adding Bing.

Is Bing worth the effort when most people use Google?

For most local businesses, yes, because the effort is small next to what it reaches. A good share of the work reuses what your Google setup already has: the same pages, the same business facts, the same reviews. What it adds is Bing's own index, which sits behind Windows search, Edge, Copilot and part of what Yahoo and DuckDuckGo show. If the Google side is not in order yet, we fix that first, since Bing rewards the same basics.

Will ranking on Bing get us mentioned by Copilot or ChatGPT?

It helps, and it is not a guarantee. Copilot looks things up on Bing, so a page Bing indexes and ranks is a page Copilot can find and link. ChatGPT has drawn on Bing as one of its search sources, alongside others OpenAI does not fully spell out. Neither company publishes how an answer picks its sources, so we treat Bing as one input we can actually work on. The wider assistant work, off your site, is on our generative engine optimization page.

Can Bing Places just copy my Google Business Profile?

It can import from it, and we usually start there because it saves retyping everything. Treat the import as a first draft. Categories may not carry across exactly, photos and service areas need checking, and a detail that was wrong on Google arrives wrong on Bing. We check each field once the import lands, then keep the two listings in step whenever something changes.

What is IndexNow, and does our site need it?

It is a simple way for a website to tell Bing, and the other search engines that accept it, that a page is new, changed or gone. Without it, Bing finds out whenever it next crawls you, and for a small site that can take a while. It is not required, but it is cheap to set up and matters most when you publish often or change hours, offers or service areas. Plenty of website platforms support it already; where yours does not, we add it.

How soon will we see anything from Bing?

Verification, the sitemap and a corrected Bing Places listing take effect quickly, often within a few weeks. Rankings move more slowly, usually over a few months, much as they do on Google. Bing sends fewer visits than Google in most markets, so we judge it over a quarter rather than a single month, and we report calls and forms from Bing on their own line so you can see whether it pays its way.
