ServiceTitan marketing tools vs a marketing agency
For HVAC, plumbing and electrical owners on ServiceTitan: what its marketing add-ons do well, what an agency adds, and how the two can work together.
The end of July is the top of the year for most HVAC companies. Techs are running back-to-back no-cool calls, the dispatch board is full by nine in the morning, and the owner has no time to think about marketing, which is exactly when the question of who should be doing it gets asked.
If the company runs on ServiceTitan, the question has a particular shape. ServiceTitan sells its own marketing tools, and the rep will point out, fairly, that the software already knows your customers, your jobs and your revenue. So why pay an agency? And if you already have an agency, why pay for the add-ons? The two are not really competitors, but they do overlap, and it helps to see where.
Software you run versus a team that runs it
The real difference is not features. It is who does the work.
- Marketing software gives your team tools: campaigns, templates, dashboards, automation. Somebody in your office still decides what to send, when, to whom, and what to change when results slip.
- A marketing agency gives you people who do that work across channels, including the ones outside your software: the Google Business Profile, search rankings, ad campaigns and the website.
A company with an office manager who loves marketing can get a lot from software alone. A company where the owner is also the best tech on the truck usually cannot.
What ServiceTitan’s marketing tools do well
ServiceTitan is field service management software for the trades, and its marketing add-ons, sold under the Marketing Pro name, sit on top of the job and customer data it already holds. Depending on the plan, that can include email campaigns to your customer list, review requests after jobs, call tracking and attribution that tie calls and booked jobs back to campaigns, and tools that send job outcomes back to ad platforms. Ask which of these are in your package, and get the list in writing.
The strength is the data. ServiceTitan knows which customers have not had maintenance in a year, which estimates went unsold, which memberships are about to lapse and what a job was worth. Marketing built on that is precise, especially for retention: maintenance reminders, unsold estimate follow-up and membership renewals. And attribution measured against booked revenue tells an owner far more than attribution measured against clicks.
What a marketing agency does well
An agency works where new customers come from. It manages the Google Business Profile so you show up on the map, runs local SEO and the website, builds and manages Google Ads and Local Services Ads, writes the ads and the pages, and adjusts spend week to week as demand swings with the weather.
The strength is judgment across channels. Someone watches the search terms, notices the competitor who started bidding on your name, and moves budget from furnace replacement to AC repair the week the heat arrives. Software can report that change. It does not make the decision.
The weakness is data. An agency that cannot see what happened after the phone rang will optimize for calls or form fills and report on those, which is how a campaign can look busy while the booked-job count stays flat.
ServiceTitan’s tools and an agency compared
| ServiceTitan marketing tools | Marketing agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | Your team, inside the software | The agency’s team, across channels |
| Strongest at | Retention and follow-up with existing customers | Winning new customers from search, maps and ads |
| Data | Jobs, revenue, memberships and customer history | Whatever you give it access to |
| Channels | Email, reviews and ad data from your job records | Profile, SEO, website, ads and creative |
| Reporting | Booked jobs and revenue by campaign | Varies widely; ask for booked jobs by source |
| Ask first | Which tools your plan includes and who on your team runs them | Who owns the accounts and whether it will report from your job data |
The good and the less good
ServiceTitan’s marketing tools
Pros
- Built on your real job and customer data, so targeting is precise
- Well suited to maintenance reminders, unsold estimates and memberships
- Attribution to booked jobs and revenue rather than clicks
Cons
- Someone in your office has to run it, every week
- Built around your existing customer list, so the map pack, rankings and website still need someone
- Which tools you get depends on your package, so confirm before planning around one
A marketing agency
Pros
- A team that does the work, including strategy and creative
- Covers new-customer channels: profile, SEO, website and ads
- Adjusts to weather, capacity and competitors week to week
Cons
- Quality varies a great deal from one agency to the next
- Without access to your job data, reporting stops at the phone call
- Ownership of accounts must be settled in writing
Who needs what
A ten-truck HVAC company with a full-time marketing coordinator. ServiceTitan’s tools can carry retention marketing in-house, and an agency focused on new customers fills the gap on search and ads.
A four-truck plumbing company where the owner does the marketing at night. Start with an agency. The software’s campaigns are worth adding once someone other than the owner can run them.
A company with a large customer list and weak maintenance sales. The ServiceTitan add-ons are the obvious first spend, because the opportunity is in customers you already have.
A company new to an area with few past customers. Retention tools have little to work with yet. The job is visibility, which is agency work.
An agency that reports in booked jobs
The best arrangement is usually both: the software handling your customer list, and an agency that wins new customers and is judged on the same booked-job numbers the software already tracks. That is how Beyaoshy works with home service companies. We have worked with local businesses since 2015, and one team runs the Google Business Profile, local SEO, Google Ads and Local Services Ads, review requests, the website and the CRM follow-up, so the pieces do not pull against each other.
Where a company already runs its jobs in field service software, the first thing we ask for is a way to see booked jobs by source, because that is the number our work should be measured against. The ad accounts, the site and the data are yours from the first day. Our plans are built for a company that would rather spend on trucks and techs. And other agencies white-label our services under their own name, which keeps us honest about quality.
Before the season turns
If you run ServiceTitan, spend an hour in August checking which marketing tools your package includes and whether anyone is actually using them. Then ask whoever runs your ads, in-house or agency, to report booked jobs by source from your job data rather than calls or clicks.
