WebFX vs Thrive: which agency suits a local business

WebFX and Thrive are both national full-service agencies. How they differ for a local business, what to ask each, and when a local specialist fits better.

November is budget month. The owners we talk to are closing out the busy season, looking at what marketing produced this year, and deciding whether next year’s money stays with the current provider or goes somewhere new. Owners who have grown past a freelancer or a one-person shop often end up with two well-known national agencies on the shortlist, and WebFX and Thrive Internet Marketing Agency are a pairing we hear about often.

They are both established full-service agencies with wide menus. For a local business the choice between them is less about which is better and more about which is shaped for you, and whether a national full-service agency is the right kind of partner at all. Here is how we would think it through if we were on your side of the desk.

Two national agencies, one local business

The local businesses weighing this are usually past the startup stage: a heating and cooling company with several trucks, a dental group with two or three offices, a remodeler moving into a second metro, a med spa brand planning another location. Four questions tend to decide it.

  1. How much of your marketing is local search? If most of your calls come from the map results and your Business Profile, you want a team that lives in local SEO rather than one that treats it as one service among many.
  2. How big is the program? A full-service agency earns its keep when you need SEO, content, paid media, a website and email all moving together.
  3. Who will actually work on the account? At any agency of real size, the answer is a specific team, and that team matters more than the logo.
  4. What does the report measure? Calls and booked jobs, or rankings and traffic.

WebFX: a large full-service shop with its own platform

WebFX offers the whole digital range: SEO and content, paid search and paid social, web design and development, email, conversion work and more. It offers that range to companies in many industries, not only to local ones. What sets it apart is its own marketing technology, MarketingCloudFX, which it presents as the way it tracks leads and calls and ties marketing activity to revenue. For a business that wants its marketing measured against sales rather than clicks, that emphasis on attribution is a genuine strength.

WebFX also teaches in public. Its website carries a large library of free articles and guides on marketing strategy and channels, so an owner can read how it thinks before booking a call. Openness like that is a good sign in any agency.

For a local business the things to confirm are how local SEO and the Business Profile are handled within a broad program, who the day-to-day team will be, and how call and booking data from your own systems will feed its reporting.

Thrive: a wide menu with local services on it

Thrive Internet Marketing Agency is also full-service, and its menu is broad: SEO, local SEO, paid ads, web design, social media, online reputation management, email, ecommerce and marketplace marketing. It works with businesses of many sizes and gives small and mid-sized companies and franchises a prominent place in its pitch, and it lists local SEO and reputation management as services in their own right, which is useful for a business whose phone rings mostly from Google Maps.

For an owner who wants one agency to cover the website, the local listings, the reviews and the ads, that range is convenient. As with any agency this broad, what you receive depends on the package and the team assigned, so ask to see a sample report from a client in a business like yours and ask who will handle your account each week.

What each does well, and where to be careful

WebFX

  • Strong at connecting marketing activity to leads and revenue through its own platform.
  • Broad capability across SEO, content, paid media and development.
  • A lot of public educational material, which makes its approach easy to understand before you call.
  • Be careful that a local business’s specific needs, the map results, reviews and Business Profile, get enough attention inside a larger program.

Thrive

  • A wide menu that includes services aimed squarely at local businesses.
  • Convenient for owners who want web, reviews, local search and ads from one agency.
  • Speaks directly to small and mid-sized companies in its pitch, so a business your size is part of the audience it has in mind.
  • Be careful to confirm exactly what a package includes and who does the work, since broad menus can mean quite different programs from one client to the next.

Picking by situation

  • A home services company with three locations and a strong ads budget, planning a bigger content push. A full-service firm like WebFX, with attribution at the center, fits the size of the ambition.
  • A single-location med spa that needs a new site, a reputation program and local SEO. Thrive’s menu lines up with that list, provided the package is spelled out.
  • A dental group whose calls come mainly from the map pack. Either can work, but press both on how much monthly time goes to the Business Profiles, reviews and location pages.
  • Any business that sells beyond its local area. Both agencies handle ecommerce and wider programs, which a local specialist will not.

A local specialist as the third choice

Beyaoshy is narrower than either, deliberately. We work only on marketing for businesses that serve a local area, and we have done that since 2015. That focus shows up in the work: the Business Profile, local SEO, Google and Meta ads, review requests, the website and the CRM are run by one team, so the person adjusting your ads knows which location’s reviews dipped last week and which service page is converting.

Our reports open with calls answered, calls missed and appointments booked, taken from the CRM rather than estimated. Every account, including the domain and the ad accounts, is in your name from the first day. Agencies also white-label our work under their own brands, which tells you something about how dependable it is. The trade-off is plain: if you need ecommerce, marketplace or national lead generation work, pick one of the full-service agencies instead.

Before the new budget year

Take whichever shortlist you have and ask every agency the same three things in writing: who works on the account each week, what the report counts, and who owns the accounts and site if you part ways. The answers will separate them faster than any sales call. For what a local-first program looks like, see our local SEO page, or start from the page for business owners.
